EMBRYO

Whats up... Here's our new interview with our good friends in fellow HKHC band Embryo! :-) They've been out of commission for a long time and they discuss why...enjoy the interview! (They haven't given me any photos yet...they said they'll give it to me in a few days...)
ENJOY!!!

HONG KONG HARDCORE

Can you tell us who is in the band and how old they are?

Embryo includes 5 members: Tai is the vocalist; the drummer is Shun, guitarist Ray and Tung on the bass. In early 2006, a new member joined us on guitar Mike. Five of us are all born in late 80’s.

When did you guys start playing music and why?

We started playing music when we were studying in Form3 because Tai, Shun, Mike, and Tung were all studying at the same school. We started the band because we love playing music and want to share our feelings with others.

What was the first show you guys watched in Hong Kong?

The first show that Shun, Mike, Tung and I watched in Hong Kong was the Poly Muso Annual Performance in Ko Shan Theater. The bands included KLC, Lam Kei, Sanskirt, Hardpack and Paul Wong. For Ray, his first experience was the first FARM show in Victoria Park which included KLC, Fat Job, Tatfilp, Circle, and others…

What do you remember from the show?
TAI: I remembered most of the audience went to the front of the stage at the end of the show, and we sang and jumped together. The atmosphere was great, it was unforgettable.

Ray: That was the first time I heard heavy music in Hong Kong, at that time I thought people moshing were too crazy, but I love moshing right now. That was such an unforgettable thing.
MIKE: The
very first time I felt the craziness of the HK underground scene, after that night I told myself ... I’ll be one of those guys in the near future…

What Hong Kong bands have influenced you guys and why?

TAI: There are two HK bands that have had the biggest influenced on me. Beyond: a legendary rock band in Hong Kong. They motivated me to learn guitar and start to play in a band. The other band is Lam Kei: they brought me into the HK underground music scene.

Ray : Probably King Ly Chee has influenced me the most, they inspired me to want to learn more about HARDCORE. Then I tried to search for some foreign hardcore bands so I could understand what the purpose of hardcore is. I’m addicted to it!

MIKE: I respect beyond for what they have done and accomplished...but my personal favourite Hong Kong band is LMF...

SHUN: Beyond raised the interest in to start a band and then i started playing drums. The other local band that brought me to independent bands i think is LMF. I started to notice local bands after they got into people’s eyes.

When you wake up first thing in the morning what is the ONE CD that you MUST play? And why?

Ray: For me it's probably Los Indios Tabajaras – Always In My Heart. It is a really fantastic CD. This band is formed by Brazilian brothers and it helps me enjoy the morning.

TAI: I usually listen to the radio program<<在晴朗的一天出發>> when I wake up. But sometimes I listen to different CDs in the morning, just up to whatever feelings I have when I wake up.

MIKE: Depends on what is new recently. To be honest, I listen to my band's own demo every morning.

SHUN: Haha...same as Mike, I will listen to our own song first everyday, then listen to other stuff.

What local musicians influence your guitar playing, drums, vocals, etc?

Ray: Actually I learnt piano first. I’ve learnt different classical instruments and one day, I felt a bit bored with the classical tone and I wanted to have something heavier and my dad suddenly played me a song with a guitar - Smoke On The Water. After that I felt that I should learn the guitar and I’ve been playing to this day. Actually I was influenced by my daddy to play guitar.

TAI: I was the guitar player when this band started; Paul Wong should be the one who influenced me the most.

MIKE: All my band mates...I’ll never play better guitar if ray sucks ass... I’ll never write better music if Tai just comes out with garbage...they are all my influences.

SHUN: In fact, the guy whom I learned drums from is the one who influenced me the most. He taught me all the basic skills and some advanced techniques which I still keep practicing today. He told me the important points of being a drummer. Although there are some problems with his personality, I really see him totally into the drums. So I respect him and do think that he is one of the top ten drummers in Hong Kong.

You are one of the few hardcore bands in Hong Kong – why hardcore? What about hardcore is so special to you guys?

As we understand what is hardcore, we feel hardcore is really meaningful to us. We made a self-reflection and it’s really changed our lives to live in a positive way. We choose to be a hardcore band because of the meaningful attitude of hardcore with the independent cerebration and caring of society. And we want to promote this spirit to the people around us.

What hardcore bands really got you into hardcore?
Ray: King Ly Chee, Evergreen Terrace, Throwdown, Comeback Kid

TAI: King Ly Chee, Poison The Well, Unearth

Mike: Poison the Well, Story of the Year, Underoath

SHUN: Throwdown, King Ly Chee

What do you think of this explosion of metal-core? Do you consider “metal-core” part of hardcore?
We don’t think there is any disadvantage of the explosion of metal-core, it’s good to see that there are many types of hardcore bands lined up. These are new and good elements for hardcore. We do consider metal-more part of hardcore because its based on the hardcore attitude no matter what xxx-core it is.

What do you think about “hardcore” bands using make-up and focus a lot on their fashion? Do you consider this “hardcore”?

Hardcore does not have any dress code, so we don’t think hardcore bands need to pay too much attention on fashion. Although there are many hardcore bands out there using make up or dressing up, but just like the way we look at music, if their base is still on the hardcore attitude, they are still considered hardcore. The most important thing is stay true to yourself.

What do you think of the current state of HKHC?

Their aren’t enough Hardcore bands in HK. We need more new-blood to make HKHC stronger. In fact we are new too, so we want to work harder to make HKHC stronger. And we hope that all the HK bands can be united together, to make this scene stronger.

What do you hope to accomplish with Embryo?

We hope that Embryo can have a self-titled CD and that’s already enough for us.

Why has Embryo been taking a break? When do you think you guys will be playing again?
We are having a break because we think our songs are not good enough, so we are doing some rearrangements of the old songs and writing new songs. opefully we can start playing again this summer. But for now the main thing is to write better songs first .
