Who is in the band? How and when did it
start?
Jan and Kin on vox, Kit on drums, Him on guitar and Yu on bass.
Freestyle (the original name of the band) basically shared the same
members as the line up now, but as Jan left the band in between time,
the band went on and keep experiencing for their own music style. As Jan
was back from his oversea studies, the band decided to rename the band
as they had found their own kind of music structure.
How did Jan help change
the sound of your band from Freestyle to League of Heroes?
After he came back, he brought in more melody into the songs. As we grew
up as a band, we're no longer as angry as we once were. What we do now
is more emotional and more grown up. And because of Jan, lyrically we
can look into the same topic with different points of view. Jan and Kin
have totally different personalities, we are all united again at last.
What does your
band’s name mean?
“League of Heroes” presented the united thought and concept of each
member in the band, this concept means to tell people that whoever you
are, you can also be a hero as long as you are fighting for your own
dream without fear. League of heroes does not only mean the 5 people in
the band but intended to bring more people into it and be a hero for
them.
By your
myspace page, I can see that a lot of your influences are more emotional
Japanese hardcore bands (Envy, Endzweck, etc.)? What bands and type of
music are your main influences?
All members are influenced by different music and we change as our
circumstances change.
But are there any bands in particular that you are
listening to right now that have really helped make your sound?
Such as Envy?
There so many bands that we are listening to now. We always try not
to listen to the same thing at the same time, because we really want to
bring different influences into the band, and try to make music that no
one can define.
As a drummer, what bands or musicians have influenced
you?
Ricky Chu from Taichi because he's my teacher. Lee Kwok Wah is the
biggest influence of our band mentally, and he is also our best friend
and teacher in our heart. There are many more but these two are the most
important.
How about as guitar players and vocalists?
For our bassist, Waiting So from SIQ is the biggest influence and
good friend.
For our guitarist, movies that he's seen and all the people that he's
met contribute a great part of his song writing.
For Kin, he is strongly influenced by a lot of local bands and Jun Kung.
For Jan, he is obsessed with the Brits and lots of local vocalists such
as Yan from Hardcandy, Lai from An id signal and so many more.
What are your
lyrics about?
Our lyrics are written through two points of view because we have 2
vocalists and most of the time, they ask questions and answer in
response to each other.
What is your
dream show that you want to play one day?
We don’t really have an idea for a dream show as long as the show
really belongs to ourselves and people come for the sole purpose of
listening to us, and us only.
Alright, then how about your dream show to watch? What
bands do you wish that someday you could see perform?
Woodstock (god knows when), but we really want to enjoy that
atmosphere before we die.
What was the
first show you watched in Hong Kong?
Group Show 2 on the 30th of June 2003, we still remember the
bands from that night which included KingLyChee, Fat job, Hardpack, Kick
Ball Car, Genesis and LMF etc.
What do you remember from that show? Since that was your
first show – was there anything that REALLY made an impact on you?
That’s the moment when we met each other for the first time. Without the
show we would still be strangers to each other, and there wouldn’t be a
“League of Heroes”.
When did you
know you wanted to play in a band? And why?
Since the day we fell in love with Rock’n’Roll.
What is the
future for your band (playing shows? Releasing CD’s?)? What do you hope
to accomplish?
We want to accomplish all the things that other bands want to do.
What do you
hope is the future of Hong Kong’s music community?
We want people from all around the world to not have any images of Hong
Kong when they’re listening to “Hong Kong” bands.
Tell us the 5
most important CD’s you think we should hear and why?
a. Dead Sinking Story by Envy
b. Dummy by Portishead
c. Around the Fur by Deftones
d. Barely Legal by the Hives
e. The first CD released by the 3-piece band Beyond.
